Tomato sauce stains are among the most difficult ones to clean from clothes. The thing is, most tomato sauces and ketchup contain sugar, which caramelizes when it comes into contact with heat. Unfortunately, that means that once it’s on your suit, it becomes a lot harder to remove compared to other stains. However, never fear. With these five steps, you can easily get rid of tomato sauce stains and keep your suit looking sharp.

Step 1: Blot the Stain with a Dry Towel

Before anything else, take a clean towel and blot the stain to absorb as much of sauce as possible. Be sure to dab gently and avoid scrubbing or rubbing the stain as this may spread it further and make it more difficult to clean.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain

Now you can move onto pretreating the stain. For this part, you’ll need a stain remover and a damp cloth. Start by spraying the stain remover directly onto the stain, making sure to cover entire area. Now, let stain remover sit for a few minutes before wiping away any excess with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Do a Spot Test

It’s always good to do a spot test to make sure that the cleaning product you’re using won’t damage or discolor the fabric. To do the spot test, apply a small amount of the cleaning product to an inconspicuous area and wait a minute to see if there’s any discoloration or damage. If there isn’t, then you can proceed with the treatment.

Step 4: Wash the Suit with Detergent

Once you’ve done the spot test and confirmed that the cleaning product won’t discolor or damage the fabric, it’s time to wash suit. Place suit in the washing machine with a gentle detergent and set the temperature to cold. Allow the suit to run through the entire cycle, then hang it up to dry.

Step 5: Hang the Suit Up

Finally, hang the suit up to air-dry. Avoid putting the suit in the dryer as this may cause the stain to set further. Once the suit is completely dry, it’s ready to be worn again!
