Removing Fresh Tomato Stains

The most important thing to keep in mind when attempting to lift a fresh tomato stain is to act quickly, and not let the stain set. Follow these steps:

  1. Start by running the affected area under cold water.
  2. Apply a small amount of laundry detergent directly onto the stain, and let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
  3. Gently rub the fabric together to create a lather, then rinse with cold water.
  4. If the stain remains, apply a tablespoon of white vinegar directly onto the affected area, then let it sit for another 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse with cold water and repeat as necessary.
  6. Launder your skirt as usual in washing machine.

Removing Dried Tomato Stains

When dealing with dried tomato stains, goal is to loosen up the dried residue before trying to wash it away. Here are the steps to follow when dealing with this kind of stain:

  1. Soak the affected area in a solution of 1 quart warm water and ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid for at least an hour.
  2. Using a clean cloth and a gentle rubbing motion, try to remove the stain.
  3. If more scrubbing is needed, use an old toothbrush in a circular motion.
  4. Rinse with cold water and repeat as necessary.
  5. Launder your skirt as usual in the washing machine.

Final Tips

  • Be sure to check the care instructions on your skirt to make sure that you are using the appropriate methods and materials.
  • Avoid using hot water on stains, as this can “set” them and make them harder to remove.
  • Regularly spot-treat your skirts with a quality stain-removing product.
