Tomato stains can be especially tricky to remove as tomatoes contain acidic compounds. If not treated in a timely manner, these acidic compounds can cause permanent damage to your dupioni. The first step is to blot the stain with a damp cloth. Make sure that the cloth is only damp, as too much moisture can cause the fabric to shrink and the stain to set in.
Once you’ve blotted out excess liquid, prepare a simple cleaning solution. Mix one cup of water with a teaspoon of mild laundry detergent. Then you can dip a cotton swab into the cleaning solution and dab it gently onto the tomato stain. Let the cleaning solution sit on the stain for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes have passed, rinse off any remaining cleaning solution using cold water. Then set fabric out to air dry. You can also use a hair dryer if you need to speed up the drying process.
Once fabric has dried, check to see if any residue of the stain remains. If some of the stain persists, pour a few drops of hydrogen peroxide onto it and let it sit for another 10 minutes. Once done, rinse the fabric with cold water and air dry again as before.
With these steps, you should be able to effectively remove tomato stains from your silk dupioni. Follow the instructions each time and make sure that your dupioni stays looking good as new.
