It's always a bummer when you're wearing your favorite set of scrubs but end up with a tomato stain on shoulder. Tomato stains can be especially difficult to remove due to their acidity and its ability to rapidly set into fabrics. Although it may seem like a lost cause, there are some tried and true methods of removing tomato stains you can use to get back to your former sartorial splendor.

How to Remove Tomato Stains From Your Scrubs

  • Start by dabbing the affected area with a damp cloth. Blot the stain, don't rub it – rubbing only serves to push the stain in deeper.
  • Create a mixture of ¼ cup of liquid laundry detergent, ¼ cup of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water.
  • Soak the stained fabric in the detergent-vinegar solution for about 30 minutes.
  • Rinse the fabric and blot it dry with a towel.
  • If the stain persists, mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia and 1 cup of cool water. Soak the stained fabric for 30 minutes, rinse, and blot dry.
  • If the stain is still visible, apply a paste made of two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part dishwashing detergent. Cover the paste with a damp cloth and let it sit overnight before rinsing with cold water.
  • Once the stain is gone, launder the fabric as you normally would.

Tips for Removing Tomato Stains

  • Act fast! The sooner you begin treating the stain, the more likely you are to completely remove it.
  • Use cold water when possible - hot water sets tomato stains.
  • Do not rub or scrub at the stain – this will only push the stain further into the fabric.
  • Be careful not to apply too much pressure when blotting fabric, as this can damage the fibers.
