First, you'll need to pre-treat the stain by soaking the affected area in cold water for about 20 minutes. This will help loosen stain and make it easier to remove.
Mix together two tablespoons of white vinegar and two teaspoons of dish soap in a bowl with one quart of warm water. Use a clean cloth or sponge to apply the solution to the stained area.
Using a circular motion, gently scrub the stained area with the cloth or sponge until the stain starts to lift. Rinse the area with cold water to remove the cleaning solution.
You can use a store-bought stain remover specifically designed for fabric, or create your own by mixing together baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Apply the stain remover directly to the stained area and let sit for 10 minutes.
Once you've pre-treated the stain, you can launder the poncho as usual. For best results, hang the poncho to dry instead of using the dryer.
By following these steps, you can remove those pesky tomato stains from your poncho and get it looking brand new again! Just remember to always read and follow the care instructions on the label before laundering.
