Tomato stains can quickly ruin look of a nice polo shirt. The acidity of the tomato will eat away at the fabric, making it hard to remove unless the proper steps are taken. Fortunately, you can use a few simple items around your home to get those tomato stains out for good.
The first step to removing the stain is to pre-treat the area with a mild laundry detergent. Apply a small amount of the detergent directly to the stained area and work it into the fabric using a soft-bristled brush. Allow the detergent to sit on stain for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
After you've pre-treated the stain with detergent, you'll want to rinse it with white vinegar. This helps to neutralize the acidity of the tomato and loosen any particles that are still stuck to fabric. To do this, mix together two parts cold water and one part white vinegar. Saturate the stained area with the solution, then rinse it off with cold water.
The next step is to neutralize the acidity of the tomato with a mixture of baking soda and water. To make the mixture, mix equal parts baking soda and cold water in a bowl. Saturate the stained area with mixture, then allow it to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
Once you've pre-treated the stain and neutralized it with baking soda, final step is to wash the shirt. Begin by placing the shirt in a washing machine with warm water and a mild detergent. Add a few drops of natural dish soap to the mix, as this will help break down tomato particles. After washing, hang the shirt to dry and inspect the stain to see if it has been removed.
