The sooner you act on a tomato stain, better. Immediately blot area with a damp cloth to absorb as much of the stain as possible. Don’t rub or press too hard, as this can push stain deeper into the fabric fibers.
Mix a teaspoon of dish soap with a quart of warm water. Dip a sponge or cloth into the soapy solution and gently dab at the stained area. Don't rub -- dabbing will help lift stain without pushing it further into fabric.
Once you've finished treating stain, rinse it in cold water to remove any remaining soap residue. Make sure the water runs clear before proceeding to next step.
Purchase a specialized stain remover designed to tackle tough tomato stains. If a store-bought product isn't available, you can use a combination of baking soda, water, and white vinegar instead. Apply the solution directly to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
Once stain remover has had a chance to work its magic, wash the item in the washing machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Finish with a tumble dry cycle on low heat.
