Start by pre-treating the stained area with a laundry detergent designed for pre-treating stains. Use a brush or sponge to gently scrub the area. Make sure to focus on the stain and don’t rub too hard as this could damage the fabric. Allow detergent to sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
Fill a sink or bucket with hot water and add a laundry detergent. Swish water around to make sure that the detergent is dissolved. Place the espadrilles in the water and let them soak for at least 15 minutes. Once the time is up, use a soft cloth to gently work the detergent into the stained areas. Rinse the espadrilles with clean, cool water.
If the stain persists after following steps 1 and 2, you can try a soaking method. Mix together one part baking soda and one part white vinegar. Add mixture to a bowl with enough warm water to fully submerge espadrilles. Let the shoes soak for at least an hour before washing them as usual.
If all else fails, you can try using a stain remover. Spray or pour some of the product directly onto the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub the area lightly with a scrub brush and rinse it off with clean water. Repeat as necessary until the stain has been removed.
Tomato stains can be stubborn, but with a little elbow grease and the right technique, they can be removed. Follow the steps outlined in this article and your espadrilles should be back to looking pristine in no time.
