Step 1: Act quickly

As the saying goes, time is of essence! As soon as you notice a tomato stain, use a paper towel or rag to blot away any excess liquid. Don’t rub or scrub the material, as this will only spread the stain. Continue to blot the area until no more liquid can be removed.

Step 2: Make a paste

In a shallow dish, mix together 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. When those two ingredients are fully blended, gradually add in cold water, stirring constantly. The mixture should become thick and “paste-like” -- if it’s too runny, add in a bit more baking soda.

Step 3: Apply the paste

Once your paste is ready, scoop it out of the bowl with a spoon and spread it over the tomato stain. Let the paste sit on the fabric for 20-30 minutes. Then take a damp cloth or sponge and gently scrub away the paste. Rinse the area with cold water and hang the drapery or curtain up to dry.

Reasons to Remove Tomato Stains Immediately

  • Tomato stains will become increasingly difficult to remove the longer they are left on fabric.
  • It is harder to remove the tomato dye than it is to remove juice.
  • Removing the stain quickly reduces the likelihood of a permanent stain.
