Before you attempt to treat the tomato stain, use a paper towel or a rag to absorb excess juice from the fabric. This will help you get the most out of cleaning process.
Mix some oxygenated bleach with warm water and apply it to the stain. This type of bleach works well on tomato stains as it not only helps to break up and remove the red pigment, but also helps brighten fabric. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off.
After rinsing, add the affected item of clothing to the washing machine with laundry detergent and hot water. If you have a front-loading washing machine, you can turn temperature up to highest setting, which will help remove the remaining stain. If you're washing by hand, soak your item in the hottest water possible that is safe for the fabric.
Add ½ cup of white vinegar to the washing machine and let it agitate for a few minutes. White vinegar helps to remove remaining residue and can be beneficial in getting rid of odors left behind by the stain.
