The first step to removing the tomato stain is to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Start by blotting the stained area with a clean cloth or paper towel. Do not rub the stain as this may spread it and cause it to become more difficult to remove.
Once you have absorbed as much of the liquid as possible, the next step is to pre-treat the stain. To do this, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or a pre-treater to the stained area. Gently work detergent into the fabric using a soft bristled brush. Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes before continuing.
After pre-treating, rinse the area with cold water. You want to make sure you are using cold water as hot water can set stain. Continue rinsing until all of the detergent has been removed.
Finally, launder the shirt as usual. For best results, use a mild laundry detergent and a cool water cycle. Be sure to check the shirt before putting it in the dryer, as heat can also set the stain and make it nearly impossible to remove.
Cleaning tomato stains from a collared shirt doesn't have to be complicated. With the right tools and a little bit of patience, you can easily restore your favorite shirt to its original state. Just remember to act quickly and treat stain with a pre-treater before laundering.
