Step 1: Blot the Stain Immediately

It is important to remove as much of the tomato juice from your clothing item as possible before you start to clean it. Gently blot the stained area with a paper towel or cloth until it stops absorbing liquid.

Step 2: Pre-treat Stain

You can pre-treat the stained area with a laundry detergent that contains enzymes such as Tide. Gently rub the detergent into stain, wait a few minutes and then rinse off with cool water. This will help to break down the tomato juice and make the cleaning process easier.

Step 3: Soak the Cardigan

Once you have pre-treated the stain, you can begin to soak the cardigan in a mixture of warm water and laundry detergent. Make sure that detergent is fully dissolved in the water before adding the cardigan. Soak the cardigan for at least 10 minutes before removing from the mixture.

Step 4: Wash the Cardigan

After soaking, you can begin to wash the cardigan in the washing machine. Select the gentle cycle and use a mild laundry detergent. For added stain removal, you can add a small amount of white vinegar to the wash cycle.

Step 5: Check Stains Before Drying

After the cardigan has gone through the wash cycle, you should check stain to make sure it is gone. If it is still visible, repeat the steps above. If the stain is gone, then you can proceed to the drying cycle.

Step 6: Dry the Cardigan

Once you have confirmed that tomato stain is gone, you can dry the cardigan in the dryer. It is best to select the low or delicate setting to avoid damaging the fabric. You can also air dry cardigan if you prefer.

Bonus Tip: Get Rid of Lingering Smells

If there is still a lingering smell of tomato after washing the cardigan, you can try adding a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle. The baking soda will help to neutralize any odors that may remain after washing.
