- Spray the stain with a mixture of half water and half white vinegar.
- Sprinkle the stain with baking soda and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Blot the stain with a clean towel.
- Mix up a solution of one teaspoon of detergent and two cups of warm water.
- Apply to the stained area with a sponge.
- Rinse with warm water and dry the area with a clean towel.
- If any stain remains, repeat the process.
Cleaning Older Tomato Stains
If you weren’t able to get to a fresh tomato stain right away, you will have to take a slightly different approach. Here’s what to do:
- Mix up a solution of one tablespoon of dish soap (not laundry detergent) and one quart of warm water.
- Blot the stain with the solution using a clean cloth.
- Continue to blot with an absorbent cloth until stain is gone.
- Rinse with warm water and dry with a clean towel.
- If any stain remains, repeat the process.
Important Tips for Cleaning Tomato Stains
- Be sure to test any cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of the rug first to make sure it won’t cause discoloration or damage.
- Never rub the stain as this can cause the tomato juice to spread and make the stain even bigger.
- If the stain has set in, it may be necessary to call in a professional carpet cleaner.
