As soon as you notice a tomato stain on your apron, use a paper towel or cloth to blot up any excess tomato before attempting more aggressive cleaning methods. This will reduce the amount of tomato left to clean and make the stain easier to remove.
Once you’ve blotted up the excess tomato, sprinkle some baking soda over the stained area and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This will help break down the tomato and make it easier to remove. After the allotted time, gently brush or rub off the baking soda with a damp rag.
After pre-treating the stain, launder apron as usual with either cold or warm water. Be sure to set the water temperature according to the care instructions on your apron. If the tomato stain is still present after laundering, repeat the pre-treatment steps before laundering again.
If the tomato stains still remain after laundering, it’s time to try some alternative cleaning methods. One of the most effective methods for removing tomato stains from an apron is to soak the affected area in vinegar for about an hour. After soaking, launder the apron as usual. The vinegar should help to break down the tomato and lift the stain from the fabric.
Though this method should be used sparingly, as it can damage certain fabrics, rubbing alcohol can be incredibly effective for removing tomato stains from an apron. Simply soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and dab it onto the stained area. Be sure to only use a small amount of rubbing alcohol at a time, as too much can weaken the fibers in the fabric. Once the stain is lifted, launder the apron as usual.
