The first thing you need to do before attempting to remove a tomato sauce stain is to identify the fabric of the garment in question. Different fabrics require different approaches and treatments, and it's important to get this step correct so that you don't cause further damage. If you're unsure what type of fabric you're dealing with, consult the label for instructions.
Once you've identified the fabric of your top, you can begin the process of cleaning it. Here are the steps you should follow for specific fabric types:
Sometimes a tomato sauce stain may require a more dedicated approach. To handle tougher stains, you can use a combination of white vinegar and baking soda. Start by sprinkling baking soda over stain and adding a few drops of white vinegar. Once the mixture starts to fizz, use a soft cloth to work paste into the fabric. Leave the paste to sit for a few hours, then rinse out with cold water. Repeat the process if necessary, then wash the garment as usual.
If the stain still remains, you can try treating it with a solution of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a few drops of ammonia. Make sure to test the solution on a small patch of fabric first, then dab it onto the remaining mark. Rinse off the solution after a few minutes, then wash the garment as directed.
