What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Detergent
  • Clean sponge
  • Towel
  • Toothbrush

Method: Pre-soak

Immediately upon noticing a tomato sauce stain, begin by rinsing affected area with cold water in order to prevent it from settling into the fibers further. Once the area has been thoroughly saturated with cold water, lay it out flat on a towel and pour white vinegar over the stain. Let sit for 20 minutes.

Method: Scrub

Mix one part baking soda with one part detergent in a bowl. Using a clean sponge, apply mixture directly to the stained area and scrub gently in circular motions. Allow the mixture to stay on the sweatpants for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat this method until the stain is removed.

Method: Treat Stain

If the stain still persists, create a paste containing equal parts of baking soda and vinegar. Apply the paste to the stain, working it into the fabric with a toothbrush. Leave on for 15 minutes and then wash with hot water.

Additional Tips

  • Be sure to read the care labels on your sweatpants and follow the specific washing instructions given.
  • Be gentle when scrubbing the stain, as vigorous scrubbing can cause damage to the fabric.
  • If stain still doesn’t come out after all methods have been exhausted, it may be necessary to make a trip to the dry cleaners.
