Tomato sauce is delicious, but it’s not so great when it ends up as a stain on your clothes. If you’ve got a tomato sauce stain on your silk tussah fabric, don’t panic. Here are a few steps you can take to get your fabric looking like new again.
Before doing anything else, use a blunt knife or spoon to carefully scrape away any excess sauce from the surface of the fabric. Don’t rub the stain, as this could spread it further.
Next, apply a pre-treater such as an enzyme-based laundry detergent to the stain. Make sure that the pre-treater is suitable for silk fabrics – many commercial brands make specific versions for delicate fabrics. Let the pre-treater sit on the stain for at least 10 minutes before you proceed to the next step.
After pre-treater has had time to work, rinse the fabric with cold water. Then, put the garment in the washing machine with the hottest water setting that’s safe for the fabric. Make sure to use a mild detergent and no fabric softener. It’s important you follow the care instructions on clothing label.
After washing, tumble dry the garment on the lowest heat setting. If you’re unsure of the fabric’s tolerance for heat, air drying is a safer option.
If the stain isn’t completely gone after the first washing cycle, repeat the process. Make sure to fully dry the garment before checking for any remaining stain, as the heat from the dryer can help activate the enzymes in the laundry detergent.
By following the steps above, you should be able to easily get tomato sauce stains out of silk tussah fabric. Just remember to act quickly, scrape off the excess sauce, and use an appropriate pre-treater.
