The first step in removing a tomato sauce stain is to act quickly! If you can treat stain while it is still wet, it will be much easier to get out. Begin by blotting away as much sauce as possible with a paper towel or soft cloth.
Once you have blotted as much sauce as possible, mix a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and wring it out so that it is damp, not dripping. Gently blot stain with the damp cloth. You may need to repeat the process several times to remove all of the stain.
Once you have removed as much of the stain as possible, rinse the area with cold water and allow the fabric to air dry. It is important to never put silk in the dryer or use a clothes iron on it as this can damage the fabric.
If the stain is still present after following the steps above, try using a spot cleaner specifically formulated for silk garments. Follow the instructions on the package and test the solution on an inconspicuous area before cleaning the stain to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.
For tougher tomato stains, you may need to use a stronger cleaner. Mix one part rubbing alcohol to one part cold water and dip a cloth in the solution. Blot the stain until it is gone. Rinse the area with cold water and allow it to air dry.
No matter what type of cleaner you use, always test a small, hidden area first and read care label on your garment. This will help ensure that you don't damage the fabric.
