Shantung fabric is a polyester-rayon blend that is both durable and wrinkle-proof. While this makes it great for garments like blazers, dresses, and suits, it also makes it vulnerable to stains—especially those caused by tomato sauce. To make sure these stains are properly removed, it’s important to act quickly and use right cleaning methods.

What You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • Cold water
  • Gentle detergent
  • White vinegar
  • A sponge
  • Baking soda

Step by Step Instructions

  1. As soon as you notice the stain, use a clean cloth to blot up any excess sauce.
  2. In a bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of gentle detergent and 1 cup of cold water.
  3. Saturate a sponge in the mixture and gently scrub the stained area.
  4. Once the area has been thoroughly cleaned, rinse off the mixture with cold water and then blot dry with a clean cloth.
  5. To help fade any remaining discoloration, pour white vinegar over the stained area and allow it to sit for 15 minutes.
  6. Once time is up, rinse off the vinegar with cold water and then blot dry with a clean cloth.
  7. If the stain still hasn’t fully disappeared, sprinkle some baking soda over the stained area and let it sit overnight.
  8. The next day, vacuum up any remaining baking soda and if there are still traces of the stain, repeat steps 1-7.

Conclusion

Though tomato sauce stains can seem daunting, it's easy to get them out of Shantung with the right materials and a bit of elbow grease. With these steps, you'll have your shantung fabric looking good as new!
