The first step to cleaning tomato sauce stains from a pullover is to act as soon as you see mess. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get rid of the stain. Try to blot as much of the sauce as you can with paper towels or a clean cloth before it sinks in.
Once you have removed as much of the sauce as possible, you will need to do some preparatory work before attempting to remove the stain. Start by soaking your pullover in cold water for at least an hour. This will loosen the stain and make it easier to clean.
After letting your pullover soak, you can start cleaning by mixing a few drops of detergent into some warm water. Dip your old toothbrush into mixture and slowly scrub over the stain in circular motions. Be careful not to use too much pressure as this may cause the fabric to fray.
Once you’ve scrubbed the stain, dip a cotton swab into some white vinegar and lightly dab at the affected area to help lift the remaining stain. Then sprinkle a bit of baking soda onto the pullover and let it sit for 10 minutes. After it sits, brush off the powder and inspect the fabric. If the stain remains, repeat Steps 3 and 4 until stain is gone.
Once you’ve cleaned the stain, throw the pullover into the laundry machine on a delicate cycle. Be sure to double-check the care instructions on the label before washing to ensure that you won’t damage the fabric. Once cycle is finished, tumble dry on low heat.
Tomato sauce stains can be a challenge to remove, but with the right cleaning methods and a little patience, you can restore your pullover to its original glory. Follow the steps above to get rid of the stain quickly and easily.
