Remove Fresh Tomato Sauce Stains

Tackle fresh tomato sauce stains as soon as possible for the best chance of success. Blot the area using an absorbent paper towel or cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this will only spread the stain. Spray the affected area with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. The acidity in the vinegar helps break down proteins in the tomato sauce and make them easier to remove. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes, then blot the area again.

Clean Set-in Tomato Sauce Stains

Just like fresh stains, it's best to clean set-in tomato sauce as soon as possible. Start by spraying the area with club soda. This helps break up the proteins and dissolve the stain. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then use a clean cloth to blot the area. Next, prepare a mixture of warm water and a mild laundry detergent. Use a cloth or sponge to gently rub mixture into the stain. When finished, rinse the area well with cold water. Finally, lay the fabric flat to air dry.

Additional Strategies

  • For tough set-in stains, mix one part baking soda in three parts water and apply it directly to the stain.
  • Failed to get the stain out the first time? Keep trying! It may take several attempts, but eventually the stain should lift.
  • If you have the time, soak fabric in a combination of hot water and white vinegar for up to one hour.
