Merino wool is a durable and long-lasting fabric, but it's also prone to staining. Tomato sauce, in particular, can be very difficult to remove if stain isn't treated quickly and appropriately. Don't panic, though - all is not lost. Read on for easy, step-by-step instructions on how to tackle tomato sauce stains on merino wool.

What You Will Need:

  • White vinegar
  • Mild liquid detergent
  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Step 1: Blot the Stain Immediately

The key to successfully removing a tomato sauce stain from merino wool is to act quickly. As soon as you notice the stain, use a clean sponge or cloth to dab at it gently, working from the outside of the stain inwards. Do not rub or scrub at stain, as this may cause further damage to fabric and make the stain worse.

Step 2: Create a Vinegar and Detergent Mixture

Mix white vinegar and a mild liquid detergent together in equal parts. This will create a powerful yet gentle cleaning solution that should be safe to use on your merino wool.

Step 3: Apply the Mixture to the Stain

Saturate the tomato sauce stain with the vinegar and detergent mixture. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 4: Repeat if Necessary

If the stain is still visible after rinsing, mix lemon juice in with the vinegar and detergent. Once again, saturate the stain with the mixture and allow it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing and drying.
