Tomato-based sauces like pizza and pasta sauces can end up leaving behind stubborn stains on tablecloths and other linens if not treated properly. Before treating the stain on your fabric, it must be determined what type of material fabric is made of. Different fabrics require different methods for treating a stain. Generally speaking, fabrics like silk and wool should be taken to a professional dry cleaner, while cotton and polyester can be treated at home.
To treat a tomato sauce stain at home, start by scraping away any excess sauce using dull side of a knife. Then, create a solution by combining one part white vinegar, two parts water, and a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Soak a clean cloth in the solution and dab it onto the stain until it has been completely saturated. Press firmly as you dab, then let the solution soak into the fabric for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rinse fabric with cold water and blot dry with a towel.
If you don't have white vinegar available, there are several natural remedies that can be used to remove tomato sauce stains from your linen. One option is to make a paste of baking soda and water, then rub it onto stain. Let the paste sit and absorb the stain for a few minutes, then rinse it off with cold water. Another option is to simply sprinkle some salt directly onto stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Once the salt has had a chance to absorb the stain, lift the salt and wash the fabric as normal.
By taking a few preventative measures, you can avoid tomato sauce stains on your linen altogether. Before eating, make sure to place your napkins and tablecloths on top of the tablecloth, or underneath your plate. This will help protect tablecloth from any spills. If you do get a spill, act quickly and blot the area instead of rubbing it to prevent the sauce from spreading and causing a bigger stain.
With these easy tips and tricks, you can easily keep your linens looking fresh and stain-free!
