Before you do anything else, take a butter knife or spoon and carefully scrape off any excess tomato sauce from the fabric. Getting as much of it off as you can now will lessen amount you need to treat later.
Once you’ve gotten excess off, it’s time to pretreat the area with a stain remover. There are many store-bought solutions available, or you can make your own using regular dish soap and a small amount of white vinegar. Apply the remover directly to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then use an old toothbrush to scrub gently at fabric – but don’t rub too hard or you risk damaging the fibers.
Once the stain has been pretreated, it’s time to wash jeans. Check the label first to make sure you’re aware of any special washing instructions. Then, toss the jeans into the machine with your regular detergent. For extra cleaning power, you can also add a half-cup of baking soda to cycle.
When the cycle is finished, take the jeans out and check for results. If the stain is completely gone, great – you can move onto step 5. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain is completely gone.
Once the stain is gone, toss the jeans into the dryer. The high heat of the dryer will help set stain-fighting ingredients so they won’t reappear after multiple washings.
