Start by pre-treating the stain with a laundry detergent and cold water mixture. Leave it to sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing gently. Take care not to rub too hard as this can cause the fabric to fade or rip.
If the stain is still visible, try rubbing alcohol and a soft brush in a circular motion until the mark disappears. Once again, use light pressure so that you don’t damage the fabric.
Lastly, launder the item in cool or warm water. Always check the garment’s label for washing instructions and follow accordingly.
For stubborn stains, let the garment soak overnight in a detergent and water solution before laundering. You may also want to use a pre-soaking product like OxiClean or a bleach-free oxygenated bleach like Apple Air.
If you don’t have any of these products, make a paste of baking soda and cold water and apply it directly to area. Leave it for 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water and launder as usual.
Tomato sauce stains can be difficult to shift, but if you act quickly and use the right products, you’ll be able to get rid of them. Follow the steps above and you should be able to save your gingham from the dreaded sauce accident!
