When it comes to removing tomato sauce stains, the sooner you act, the better. As soon as you notice a stain on your garment, blot it with a clean, damp cloth to remove as much of the excess sauce as possible. Do not rub or scrub at the stain, as this may cause the stain to spread.

Once you’ve blotted the excess sauce, pretreat stained area with a stain remover or laundry detergent before washing. If the stain is still visible after the first treatment, try using some distilled white vinegar on the area instead. Simply put a few drops of vinegar directly onto the stain and let it sit for five minutes, then rinse with cold water. The vinegar will help break up the stain.

If the stain is still not coming out, try soaking the clothing in a gentle enzymatic cleaner such as Biz, Purex, or Tide StainRelease. Follow directions on the package, and then launder as usual. It may take a few tries to completely remove the stain, so be sure to check the garment after every wash.

Finally, always hang dry or dry flat after washing to avoid heat damage, which could potentially set the stain. You may have to repeat the above steps several times to get rid of stubborn tomato sauce stain, but with a bit of patience and perseverance, you should be able to restore your favorite evening gown.
