Removing tomato sauce stains from cotton poplin can be challenging, as the acid in the sauce can quickly set into the fabric. To tackle the stain, act fast and follow these steps:

  • As soon as possible, gently blot stain with a towel. Make sure you don’t rub or scrub fabric, as this could make the stain spread or become more embedded.
  • If there is still sauce left on the fabric, mix a solution of equal parts Dawn dish soap, white vinegar, and cool water. Dip an old toothbrush or soft-bristled brush into the mixture and gently scrub the stain.
  • Rinse fabric with cold water, then blot it with a towel to remove any excess moisture.
  • Once excess moisture is gone, lay the fabric on a flat surface and sprinkle baking soda over the stained area. Let the baking soda sit on the fabric overnight.
  • In morning, vacuum up the baking soda, then wash the fabric in cold water with mild detergent. Hang to air dry, or put fabric in dryer on a low setting.

If the stain persists after going through these steps, you may need to consider using a stronger cleaning agent, such as bleach. Always remember to test a small, hidden area of fabric first to make sure the bleach won’t discolor or damage it.
