What You'll Need:
- Mild detergent
- White vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Clean cloth
Steps for Cleaning Tomato Sauce Stains on Cotton Piqué:
- As soon as possible, scrape off as much of the excess tomato sauce as you can, being careful not to spread it.
- Turn the fabric inside out, and gently dab at the stain with a clean cloth dampened with some mild detergent. Don't rub, just blot.
- Rinse off the detergent so that it doesn't set in the fabric.
- If the stain persists, mix 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water, and apply the mixture to the stain with a fresh cloth. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing.
- Once the stain is gone, rinse the area thoroughly with cold water.
- If any discoloration remains, you can use hydrogen peroxide to bleach out the stain. Mix half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a quarter cup of water, and apply the solution to the stain--again, be sure to do this on the reverse side of the fabric. Wait 15 minutes, then rinse off.
- Machine wash the garment according to the care instructions on the tag.
Tips for Avoiding Tomato Sauce Stains on Cotton Piqué:
- The best way to avoid stains is to take preventive measures. When eating foods that are likely to stain, such as tomato sauce, take extra care not to get any on your clothing.
- If you think you might get splattered with tomato sauce, it's a good idea to wear an apron.
- Ideally, you should also treat clothes with a pre-treatment product that helps repel stains.
