The first step for tackling tomato sauce stains is to remove any excess liquid from the stained area. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth or paper towel and gently press down onto the stains. Do not rub, as this could spread the stain further.
Once you've blotted as much excess sauce as you can, pre-treat the stain by applying a laundry detergent to it. Make sure to use a detergent specifically designed for colorfast fabrics, such as cotton denim. Work the detergent into the fabric using a toothbrush or soft cloth.
While still in the pre-treat stage, soak stained area in some lukewarm water for about 20 minutes. This will help to loosen the stain and allow the detergent to work its magic.
After pre-treating and soaking, rinse fabric in hot water to remove any residue detergent. Do not put the garment in the washing machine until you have thoroughly rinsed away all detergent.
Once the garment has been throughly rinsed, it's safe to put it in the washing machine. The hotter the water, the better, as this will help to remove any stubborn stain residue. Use your normal detergent and don't forget to read any special care instructions on the clothing label. Finally, tumble dry the garment on hottest setting, but be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions before doing so.
