Step 1: Freshly Stain Your Fabric Immediately

If a tomato sauce stain has just happened, the golden rule is to act fast. Do not wait a day; blot stain right away so that it doesn't seep further into the fibers of fabric.

Step 2: Dilute with Water

Mix mild laundry detergent with water and blot the stain with a clean cloth. This can help to dilute the stain before you start laundering the fabric.

Step 3: Pre-treat with an Enzyme Cleaner

Enzyme cleaners are specifically designed to break down proteins found in tomatoes and other stubborn stains. Allow the enzyme cleaner to soak the stain for at least 15 minutes before washing. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.

Step 4: Wash on Warm Cycle

Machine wash garment using a warm water cycle and regular laundry detergent. If the stain persists, repeat Steps two and three. For delicate fabrics such as chambray, use a gentle and delicate laundry detergent designed for wool or silk.

Step 5: Air Dry Not Tumble Dry

When the garment is finished washing, hang it up to air dry. Do not tumble dry the fabric until stain is completely removed. Tumble drying may set the stain and make it even more difficult to remove.

Bonus Tip: Rinse with White Vinegar

To ensure that the tomato sauce stain has been completely removed, rinse the fabric with a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts water. White vinegar helps to remove any lingering odors from the tomato sauce.
