Gather Supplies

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Clean cloth or brush

Step 1: Soak in Cold Water

As soon as possible after stain occurs, soak the area of clothing directly affected by tomato sauce in cold water for at least 30 minutes–the longer, the better. This will help dilute the sauce and lessen the intensity of the stain.

Step 2: Work in Detergent

Make a paste with a few squirts of dishwashing liquid (detergent) and baking soda. With a clean cloth or soft brush, gently work the paste into the stain. Rinse the fabric with cold water, using your hands to rub the area together if needed.

Step 3: Make a Vinegar Solution

Mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth in the solution and dab it onto the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse with cold water.

Step 4: Launder as Usual

Wash garment as usual, following the care instructions on the label. If stain is still present, repeat the steps above until it's gone.
