The key to success when it comes to removing tomato sauce stains from cardigans is acting quickly after spillage occurs. The faster you can act, the more likely you are to remove the stain successfully.
1. Scrape off excess sauce. Using a spoon or blunt knife, carefully scrape away as much of sauce as possible without causing any damage to the fabric.
2. Soak the cardigan in cold water. Place the cardigan in cold water and let it soak for 30 minutes.
3. Make soap mixture. In a separate bowl, mix together one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and two cups of cold water.
4. Apply soap mixture to the stain. Dip a sponge or scrub brush into the soapy mixture and apply it directly to the stain.
5. Rinse with cold water. Rinse the area with cold water and check to see if the stain has lightened or disappeared.
6. Treat with vinegar. If stain is still visible, mix together one part white vinegar and two parts cold water, then apply it directly to the stained area using a sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.
7. Pretreat with laundry detergent. If the stain persists, pretreat area with some liquid laundry detergent. As with the vinegar, let detergent sit on the stain for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.
8. Launder, Air Dry. Wash the cardigan by itself in cold water, then hang it up to air dry.
