Step 1: Scrape Off as Much of the Sauce as Possible

Gently scrape off any excess sauce from the fabric with a spoon or butter knife. Be careful not to press too hard or you may damage your clothing.

Step 2: Pre-Treating the Stained Area

Using a cloth or sponge, rub some liquid laundry detergent directly into the stain. Allow it to sit for five minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 3: Washing the Garment

Place the stained area of the garment or fabric into washing machine. Use cold water and a gentle cycle. If necessary, repeat the pre-treatment steps before washing a second time.

Step 4: Post-Wash Treatment

Once the garment has been washed, rub a dry cleaning solvent into the stain. Allow it to soak for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water.

Step 5: Drying

Let the garment air-dry or use the lowest heat setting on your dryer. Do not put fabric in dryer until the stain is completely gone.

Additional Tips

  • Be sure to check clothing labels before washing, if there is a “Dry Clean Only” label, take it to a professional dry cleaner.
  • Don't try to cover up tomato sauce stains with bleach, this will only make them worse.
  • If the stain is still present after following these steps, repeat the process until it is removed.
