What You'll Need

  • Borax laundry detergent
  • Damp cloth or brush
  • White vinegar
  • Laundry stain remover
  • Stiff-bristled brush
  • Water

Step 1: Determine the Fabric Type

Before attempting to clean your Adidas sneakers, you need to identify type of material they’re made out of. This will determine which cleaning product will be most effective for stains removal. If it’s leather, suede, or nubuck, read on for more specific instructions. For any other fabric (including canvas), proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Pre-treat the Stain with Borax

Make a solution of warm water and Borax. Apply the mixture directly onto the tomato sauce stain. Let it sit for 15 minutes before taking a damp cloth or brush and gently scrubbing the area.

Step 3: Soak the Stained Area with White Vinegar

Fill a spray bottle with one-part white vinegar and two-parts water. Spray the stained area with the solution. Allow it to sit for another 15 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Step 4: Use a Laundry Stain Remover

If the tomato sauce stain persists, apply a laundry stain remover directly onto the spot. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes before washing the sneaker in cold water.

Step 5: Go the Extra Mile with a Stiff-Bristled Brush

If the stain still won’t come out after washing, try soaking the affected area in one-part white vinegar and two-parts water. Let the mixture set for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush. Finally, rinse with cold water.
