tar

Instructions:

  1. As soon as possible, scrape off any excess tar from the area.
  2. If the spot is still wet, dab some mineral spirits onto it, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Apply a wool-safe detergent directly to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
  4. Rinse the stain with cold water. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process until it fades away.
  5. If necessary, use an old toothbrush to scrub the area gently.
  6. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with cold water again.
  7. Lay the wool item flat to dry.

Tips:

  • Make sure you test the detergent on a small area of the fabric before using it on the tar stain.
  • If there are oil stains in fabric, use a methylated spirits solution instead of the mineral spirits.
  • Alcohol-based solutions are very effective at removing tar from wool.
  • Be sure to check the care instructions of the item before cleaning it.
