Tars stains on watches are common, but can be difficult to remove. The best way to get rid of them is with an appropriate cleaner and some elbow grease. Before beginning cleaning process, it’s important to identify the type of material that makes up watch strap or casing. Different materials require different cleaning methods.
Steps for Cleaning Tar Stains From Watches
- Start by wiping down the watch with a damp cloth to remove any loose dirt or dust.
- If the watch is made of metal, use a mild solution of soap and water to rub away the tar stain. Make sure the solution is not too harsh, as it could cause damage to surface of watch.
- For leather straps, make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to tar stain. Rub gently with a soft cloth. Afterwards, wipe off any residue with a clean damp cloth.
- If the above methods do not work, try using a leather cleaner. Leather cleaners are designed specifically for leather surfaces and will be better equipped to handle tough stains.
While it can be tempting to try a harsher solvent or chemical to remove the tar stain, using these are not recommended as they could cause permanent damage to the watch.
Tips for Preventing Tar Stains
- Avoid wearing the watch in environments where tar is present, such as a construction site or near roads where there will be asphalt paving.
- Clean your watch regularly with soap and water to reduce the chance of stains sticking to surface.
- Apply a protective coat to metal watch surfaces before wearing them.
By following these tips, you can help ensure your watch stays looking good as new for years to come.
