What You'll Need

  • Dish soap/laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Old toothbrush
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Baking soda (optional)

Step 1: Scrape Away Excess Tar

If you have a lot of tar stuck on the surface, grab an old toothbrush and start gently scrubbing away at it. Make sure to be careful so you don’t damage or scratch the fabric. Keep going until no more tar is coming off.

Step 2: Mix a Cleaning Solution

Create a cleaning solution by adding a few drops of dish soap or laundry detergent to some warm water. Next, add one tablespoon of white vinegar and two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol. Mix thoroughly.

Step 3: Apply and Gently Scrub

Immerse a microfiber cloth in cleaning solution and apply it to the stain. Start scrubbing gently with the cloth or an old toothbrush, making sure not to press too hard or use too much force. Keep going until all the tar is gone.

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat If Necessary

If the stain does not come out after first cleaning, try repeating Steps 2 and 3. You can also try adding some baking soda to cleaning solution. After you’re done scrubbing, rinse off cleaning solution with a damp cloth.

Conclusion

Getting tar stains off of your vans doesn't have to be a daunting task. Following the simple steps in this article should help you get the job done quickly and easily. Now your vans can look as good as new again!
