Step 1: Test for Colorfastness

Before attempting to remove the tar, it’s important to test the fabric to make sure it is colorfast. You can do this by blotting a small area on the garment with a damp cloth. If color of the fabric does not change or fade, then it is safe to move to the next step.

Step 2: Scrape Off Excess Tar

The next step is to scrape off any excess tar. A butter knife or other plastic tool can be used for this. Carefully scrape away the tar, taking care not to damage fabric. Once you have scraped away as much as possible, you are ready to move to next step.

Step 3: Soak in Warm Water

Fill a bucket or sink with warm water and add some laundry detergent. Soak the traditional dress for at least 30 minutes. This will help loosen and dissolve the tar.

Step 4: Apply Specialized Stain Remover

After soaking, use a specialized stain remover or a mixture of dish soap and white vinegar to gently massage tar stain. Work solution into fabric and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This will help break down the stain further.

Step 5: Rinse and Wash

Rinse the fabric in clean water and then put it in the washing machine. Use the hottest setting that is safe for the fabric and wash as usual. If the stain is still visible, repeat the steps until it is completely removed.
