First, start by soaking the garment in cold water for a few minutes. This helps to break up the tar a bit, making it easier to remove later. After it's been soaked, apply some dishwashing detergent and scrub gently with a brush. Avoid using a brush that is too abrasive, as it could damage the fabric.

If the stain still won't budge, you can try using a pre-treatment or spot remover. Carefully read the instructions on the packaging and follow them accordingly. You may need to treat the area several times for the best results. Once finished, throw the garment into wash with a regular load of laundry.

For particularly stubborn stains, you can always try using rubbing alcohol or paint thinner on the affected area. Keep in mind that these products may damage and discolor the fabric, so test a small area first before proceeding. Always wear gloves when working with rubbing alcohol or paint thinner, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Once the cleaning process is finished, you should be able to enjoy your tank top free of tar stains. However, be sure to keep an eye out for any stubborn remaining stains that may not have been completely removed. In this case, repeating the above steps may be necessary.
