No matter how careful you are, it’s impossible to avoid tar stains. Whether you’ve stepped in a puddle of tar while working on a construction site, or you’re trying to remove a smudge of road tar from the side of your car, tar stains can seem nearly impossible to get out. And sometimes, even after all of your best efforts, a little bit of tar might remain on your clothes and your favorite sweater may take hit.
How to Remove Tar Stains from Your Sweater
Fortunately, tar stains don’t have to last, and there are plenty of simple and efficient ways to remove them from your clothing, including your favorite sweater. Here are the steps you should take:
- Dampen the stain – Use a moist cloth or paper towel to dampen the tar stain. This will help to soften the tar and make it easier to remove.
- Scrape off the tar – Use a dull knife or spoon to scrape off as much of tar as you can. Be careful not to rub too hard so that you don’t damage fabric.
- Use oil to remove the tar – Rub oil into the stain and allow it to sit for at least 10-15 minutes. This will help to break down the tar and make it easier to remove. Try using vegetable oil, olive oil, baby oil, or petroleum jelly.
- Wash your sweater – After tar has been softened, use a mild laundry detergent and wash your sweater according to the instructions on its care label. If the stain is still visible, you can try running it through the cycle again.
- Check for success – After the washing cycle is complete, check to see if the stain has been removed. If it hasn’t, repeat steps one through four, and then wash again. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
With these simple steps, you can remove tar stains from your favorite sweater and keep it looking its best for years to come.
