The first step is to remove any excess tar from the slippers. If possible, start by scraping away the surface tar with a blunt knife or back of a metal spoon. If some of the tar is dried on, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub it off. Be careful not to damage the fabric of slippers.

Next, make a paste using baking soda and water. Spread the paste onto the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. When the stain has softened, scrub it with an old toothbrush. Then rinse it off with warm water.

Finally, pretreat area with a prewash stain remover. Check care instructions of slippers before applying, and make sure to use a product that’s safe for the type of fabric. Let the product sit for at least five minutes, then launder the slippers according to care instructions.

After following these steps, your slippers should be free of tar stains. However, if the stain persists, repeat the process as necessary until it’s gone.
