Preparing Your Cleaning Station

Start by gathering necessary supplies for the job: a jar of petroleum jelly, some laundry detergent, clean white cloths, a washing machine and access to a sink with a faucet. Lay out the supplies in an easy-to-reach area so that you don't have to search for them in the middle of the cleaning process.

Apply Petroleum Jelly on the Stain

Take a cotton ball and apply a generous amount of petroleum jelly on the stained area. Rub petroleum jelly on stain gently using circular motions. Allow it to sit on the stain for at least 10 minutes. This will help to soften the tar and make it easier to remove.

Laundering the Stained Piece

Using laundry detergent, fill up the washing machine with cool water and add a small dose of detergent. Shake the taffeta item gently and place it into the machine. Let the fabric soak in the cleaning solution for around 15 minutes before running the cycle. After cycle is done, check to see if stain has been lifted. If not, repeat the procedure.

Drying the Item

Remove the taffeta item from the washing machine and hang it up to air dry. When the fabric is completely dry, inspect the area to check for any leftover tarnish. If there are any spots left, repeat the laundering process.
