The first step is to scrape off any visible tar that has stuck on fabric. Do not use sharp objects such as knives, or you may damage fabric. Instead, use a soft brush or a piece of cloth to scrape away the excess tar.
Next, hold fabric under running water using tongs. This helps to loosen any remaining tar particles. Be careful not to rub fabric too hard as this may aggravate the stains. If the stain is still persistent, you can soak the fabric in a solution of lukewarm water and mild detergent.
In order to completely remove the tar stains from silk satin fabric, prepare a spot-cleaning solution. For this, you will require two tablespoons of white vinegar and the same amount of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Mix the ingredients and stir until the solution is homogenous.
Using a cotton ball, apply the spot-cleaning solution onto the stained fabric in a gentle dabbing motion. Make sure to focus on the stained area and avoid rubbing the solution onto the surrounding fabric. Let the solution sit for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
Finally, rinse the fabric with cold water to remove all traces of spot-cleaning solution. Be sure to check for any remaining tar stains before drying the fabric. You may need to repeat this process if stains are still present. Once you are satisfied with the results, hang the fabric up to dry.
Tar stains on silk satin can be tricky to remove, but the steps mentioned above should help you get rid of them quickly and safely. Remember to test the cleaning solution on a small area of the fabric before applying it to the stained area.
