The most important step when removing tar stains from silk dupioni is treating the stain with rubbing alcohol. Use a clean lint-free cloth to dab a small amount of the alcohol onto the stained area. Continue dabbing until the stain starts to lighten. Do not rub or scrub the stain, as this will damage the delicate silk fabric.
Once you’ve treated the stain with rubbing alcohol, it’s time to use a cleaning solution. You can purchase a specialty enzyme-based cleaner, or make your own mixture using equal parts dish or laundry detergent and cool water. Use a clean, damp cloth to apply the solution to stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
If stain is still present after the first treatment, you can repeat steps 1 and 2 until the stain is removed. You may want to test the rubbing alcohol and cleaning solution on a small, unnoticeable area of the fabric to ensure there are no adverse effects on the material before using it on the stain.
