tar

Because of its delicate nature, removing tar stains from your favorite silk dupioni garments or upholstery can seem like an intimidating task. But don't fear – there are methods of treating these stains that'll help keep your fabrics tidy and looking their best.

Start With An Ice Cube

Tar can be particularly stubborn, and when mixed with the delicate nature of silk, it can seem like removing it will be impossible. But there are ways to tackle a tar stain that won't damage the fabric. One of the most effective is to start with an ice cube.

To start, run the fabric under cold water to remove as much of the tar as possible. Then, put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and place it on the stained area. Leave this in place until the tar is frozen – you may need to reapply the ice cubes as they melt. This will make the tar easier to scrape off the fabric.

Cosmetic Sponge or Nail File

Using an old cosmetic sponge or nail file, gently scrape away the remaining tar. Be careful not to scrub too hard or you could cause damage to the fabric. Instead, use gentle strokes to lift the tar and debris away from the fibers of the fabric.

Cleaning Solution

When the majority of the tar has been removed, you may need to use a spot cleaning solution to remove further stains. In a bowl, mix 1 part white vinegar with 10 parts water and stir. Dip a cloth in this solution and dab the area to remove any remaining stains. Again, take care not to rub too hard, otherwise you could damage the fabric. When you're done, press a clean cloth over the area to soak up the liquid.

Re-freezing the Stained Area

The last step is to re-freeze the stained area. Put an ice cube inside a plastic bag and place it back on the fabric. Leave this in place until the stain has been fully frozen again. Then, use a spoon to scrape away any remaining tar. Once the fabric is completely clean, rinse it with cold water and allow it to air dry.
