How To Remove Tar Stains from Silk

  1. Mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with warm water.
  2. Dip a piece of soft cloth into the soapy mixture and use it to gently dab on the stain.
  3. Let the soapy mixture sit for a few minutes before wiping off any traces of the mixture with a wet paper towel or cloth.
  4. Blot the fabric with a clean cloth to absorb the moisture after wiping away the mixture.
  5. Mix rubbing alcohol and water in a ratio of 1:1 in a spray bottle.
  6. Spray the mixture on the affected area. Make sure to not oversaturate the fabric.
  7. Allow the mixture to set for a few minutes.
  8. Gently scrub the stain using a toothbrush.
  9. Wipe away the residue using a cloth moistened with water.
  10. Dry the fabric with a paper towel or cloth and leave to air dry.

Additional Tips for Cleaning Tar Stains from Silk

  • Be careful about what products and detergents you use to clean silk. Harsh chemicals may leave a white stain on the fabric.
  • If stain proves to be stubborn, try mixing equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and warm water. Apply the mixture on the stain and then wash it off with cold water.
  • Do not rub fabric as this can cause it to fray or break.
  • Always test the solutions on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first to make sure it does not damage the fabric.
