The first step is to dab liquid laundry detergent onto the tar stain. Rub it into fibers of the fabric gently, but not so much that it causes the fabric to fray. Once the detergent has been spread out evenly throughout fabric, use a clean damp cloth to wipe away as much of tar residue as possible.
Next, pour white vinegar directly onto the tar stain and let it sit for five minutes. Once the time is up, use a clean sponge to scrub the area gently. This will help to loosen up the tar, making it easier to remove.
Once the tar stain has been treated, it's time to wash the fabric. Put the dress in the washing machine and select delicate cycle. Use a mild laundry detergent and cold water when washing the fabric. You may want to consider adding some white vinegar to the wash cycle to help further remove the tar.
The last step is to air dry the fabric. If possible, hang the dress outside in the sun for a few hours. The sunlight will help to further remove the tar stain. Make sure you don't put the fabric in the dryer, as the heat can set in the stain.
Tar stains can be a real pain to remove from clothes, but it’s not impossible. With the right approach, you can easily get rid of tar stains from your shift dress. All you need is some liquid laundry detergent, white vinegar, and a good washing machine. With just a few easy steps, you can make sure that your shift dress looks as good as new.
