What You'll Need:

  • Liquid detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Stain remover spray
  • A white cloth
  • Clean water

Steps to Remove Tar Stains from Shantung:

  1. Start by lightly blotting stain with a white cloth to absorb as much of the tar as possible.
  2. Mix equal parts liquid detergent and white vinegar in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and blot at the stain until it's completely saturated. Allow this to sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Spray the stain with a stain remover made specifically for fabrics. Let this sit for 5 minutes.
  4. Blot the stain with a white cloth dampened with clean water. Repeat this process until the stain has been completely removed.
  5. Allow the fabric to air dry.

Tips for Cleaning Tar Stains from Shantung:

  • Always test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first.
  • Don't rub the stain; this can cause it to spread.
  • Be sure to use clean cloths; if you use a dirty one, you risk spreading the stain instead of getting rid of it.
  • If the stain is still present after following these steps, it's best to take the garment to a professional cleaner.
