What You’ll Need

  • A soft bristled brush
  • White vinegar
  • Laundry detergent
  • Cold water

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Scrape off as much of tar as possible. Use a soft bristled brush to gently loosen any excess tar from the fabric. Do not press down too hard or rub the fabric vigorously, as this may cause the stain to spread.

2. Pre-treat with white vinegar. Soak a clean cloth with some white vinegar and blot the stain until it is saturated. Allow vinegar to soak in for 10-15 minutes.

3. Wash using a laundry detergent. Once the white vinegar has had a chance to set, wash the garment as usual with a laundry detergent. Use cold water to rinse away the detergent and any remaining tar.

4. Dry and inspect. Hang or line dry your garment as you normally would. Inspect the fabric closely to make sure that all traces of the tar have been removed.

Additional Tips

  • If the stain remains after washing, repeat steps 2-3 before attempting to treat the fabric with a commercial stain remover.
  • Always spot test any cleaning solutions on a small, inconspicuous area of fabric before applying them to the stain.
  • For extra-stubborn stains, consider taking the garment to a professional cleaner.
