The first step is to soak the raincoat in warm water. Let the coat sit in the water for 15 minutes. This will help soften any dried tar so that it can be removed more easily.
Once the raincoat has been soaked, use an old toothbrush to scrub away any remaining tar stains. Make sure to focus on the areas where tar stains are present. Be careful not to apply too much pressure as this may damage the fabric.
If tar stains are still present after scrubbing with the toothbrush, try applying white vinegar to the affected area. Leave it to sit for a few minutes, then scrape away the tar with a knife or spatula. Repeat this step until the tar is completely removed.
Once all of tar stains have been removed, it’s time to wash the raincoat. Place it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold water and a small amount of detergent. Hang to dry when finished.
